2009 NESCAC Champions
Williams athletic director Harry Sheehy announced that Christi
Kelsey has been named the head coach of Williams women's
volleyball.
"Myself and the committee were struck by Christi's passion for the
game and her readiness to be a head coach," stated Sheehy.
Kelsey succeeds Fran Vandermeer who in nine years directed the
Ephs to five Little Three titles, six NESCAC titles and four NCAA
Elite Eight appearances in accumulating a Williams record 244
wins.
For the past three years Kelsey served as the first assistant for
the Harvard University Crimson. While with the Crimson Kelsey
provided on-court coaching, team development and served as the
Harvard's recruiting coordinator.
Prior to joining the Harvard staff Kelsey served as a volunteer
assistant coach at Wellesley College (2003-2005) and served as the
interim head coach at Wheaton College during the spring of 2005.
Kelsey was named the 2005 winner of the New England Region Rick
Pierce Volleyball Award winner for community service, sportsmanship
and the promotion of the sport of volleyball.
Kelsey also has worked as a court coach and instructor at
volleyball camps at Harvard, Purdue, Bentley, UNH and Northeastern
and has an extensive club coaching resume.
From February of 2001 through June 2006 Kelsey also served as the
Director of Corporate Training and Business Development at Deitel
and Associates, Inc. in Maynard, MA. She also Co-Authored, Simply
C++, a programming textbook.
A 2000 graduate of Purdue University, Kelsey majored in business
and minored in information systems. She was a two-time First Team
All-Academic Big Ten honoree and was named to the Dean's List seven
straight semesters. In 1998 Kelsey was named a Mortar Board Co-Top
Scholar Athlete and in 1998-99 she earned the Helen B. Schleman
Academic Achievement Award.
Kelsey will have 10 of the 11 Eph players back from the 2008 Ephs
who claimed the NESCAC and NCAA New England titles and advanced to
the Elite Eight, losing only Riki McDermott to graduation.
"Through my experience coaching at Harvard I'm looking forward to
continue coaching really academic kids who also want to excel in
athletics and this great opportunity provides that combination,"
said Kelsey.
"I want Williams volleyball to be a regional force and challenge
at the national level," stated Kelsey. "We will work on having
strong fundamentals and technique. We want to be mentally
competitive, out work our opponents, but also to have fun doing it.
Our team needs to be passionate about the game and training
together."
