Ephs Finish Wash U Invitational with a Split Record

ST LOUIS, MO – On the final day of the Washington University Invitational Tournament, the Williams College volleyball team (16-9) ended with a 2-2 overall record. The Ephs dropped the first match to Christopher Newport University 3-1 (25-20, 11-25, 10-25, 23-25), but finished the tournament with a 3-1 win over Baldwin-Wallace College (19-25, 25-20, 25-20, 25-17).
The Ephs “struggled to find a rhythm” against
Christopher Newport according to head coach Fran Vandermeer.
“We made way too many service errors.”
Leading the effort for the Ephs were senior Riki McDermott (6
digs), juniors Melissa Pun (5 kills), Chelsea Kubal (32 assists, 13
digs), Whitney Hitchcock (5 kills, 2 blocks), Andrea Scioscia (15
digs), sophomores Kate Anderson (13 kills, 3 blocks, 6 digs, 2
aces), Nicole Ballon-Landon (10 kills, 3 blocks), Eleanor Levine
(13 digs), and freshman (15 digs).
In game two, the Ephs came back to defeat Baldwin-Wallace with
strong efforts from Anderson (24 kills, .444 hitting average),
McDermott (8 digs), Hitchcock (4 blocks, 3 kills, 4 aces), Levine
(8 kills, 4 blocks, 5 aces, 10 digs), Kubal (37 assists, 15 digs),
Ballon-Landa (9 kills), Scioscia (18 digs), and McKinnon (5 kills,
9 digs).
“We finished strong after a very shaky start. Eleanor and
Kate stepped up for us, but everyone that set foot on the court
made a valuable contribution,” coach said. “I’m
proud of the way we finished. This was definitely a learning
experience.”
Kate Anderson was named to the all-tournament team.
The next bout for the Ephs comes against Tufts on October 18 at
12PM.
