Ephs drop two matches at Nazareth Invitational

ROCHESTER, NY – The Williams College women’s volleyball team (11-5, 2-0) dropped two matches Saturday to finish 2-2 at the Nazareth Invitational.  The Ephs fell to host Nazareth 3-2 (19-30, 32-34, 30-17, 30-21, 15-9) in the morning and then lost to eventual champion Cortland State 3-1 (30-25, 33-35, 30-21, 30-23) in the afternoon.

Despite the defeats, sophomore Melissa Pun was selected to the all-tournament team for the second consecutive weekend.  Pun, who was awarded the impressive honors last week at the MIT Invitational, smashed 17 kills to go along with 21 digs in the Nazareth match.

The Ephs jumped out to a 2-0 lead against Nazareth but could not finish off the Golden Flyers, dropping the final three games.  In the loss, first year setter Emily Avis posted a season high 52 assists and 7 digs, while fellow first year Kate Anderson tallied 17 kills.  Junior captain Riki McDermott collected 13 digs, while sophomore Andrea Scioscia recorded 16 digs of her own.

Williams comes home next Saturday, October 6th, to play three matches.  The Ephs will host Rutgers-Newark (11:00 AM), Skidmore (1:00 PM), and St. Joseph (3:00 PM).
