In the summer of 2007 Pete Farwell was named acting head coach
of men's and women's track & field to replace Ralph White.
Farwell had served as an assistant under White the past six years
and previous to that was the Ephs' head coach of men's &
women's track & field from 1988-2001.
Dick Farley was named the associate head coach of men's and
women's track & field. Farley is another former head coach of
Williams men's track field (1972-1987) and of women’s T&F
(1982-1987), and since 1987 an assistant coach, and also served as
the Ephs' head football coach (1987-2003).
During the 2006-07 academic year the Ephs had over 120 men and
women competing in track and field, training as a coed team.
Williams track & field teams combine enthusiasm and sacrifice,
commitment and camaraderie, to produce success and enjoyment. Eph
track is noted for its achievements on the track and are just as
highly regarded for their sportsmanship and their upbeat spirit in
competition.
The Ephs blend individual improvement with team goals to achieve
their full potential with each athlete progressing to reach their
best performance at the season-ending championships, as well as at
the end of their four years at Williams. The teams demonstrate
excellence in all events: throws, jumps, hurdles, sprints, distance
and the relays.
Williams College T&F has built a strong program over the years
and has compiled an impressive resume: in the New England Division
III Championships the women tracksters have won 14 of the last 17
outdoor titles and 10 of the past 16 indoor titles, including being
victorious in both seasons the past 5 years.
Williams has won 15 of the last 19 NESCAC titles, including the 7
most recent titles, and the 22 consecutive Little Three
Championships vs. Amherst and Wesleyan.
In 2007 Williams edged Boston College and Dartmouth to become the
first Division III team to be champions of the All-New England
Championships. Williams emerged the victors in the 2007 Indoor NCAA
Championship Meet after finishing runner-up in 2006 in both the
indoor and outdoor campaigns. The Ephs have also been 3rd four
times: indoors 2003, 2001 and 2000 and outdoors 2002.
