MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Williams College women’s track & field team won the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Championship for the 18th time in the 25-year history of the event on Saturday at Tufts University’s Dussault Track.

The Ephs, who have won the conference title outright for 10 straight years, scored 188 points to win the 2010 meet. Host Tufts placed second with 144.50 points, and Middlebury College scored 140.5 points for third place.

Williams senior Elise Johnson and first year Tanasia Hoffler both won two events. Johnson won the 100 hurdles for the third year in a row with a time of 14.70 seconds. She was also first in the 100 meter dash (12.56 seconds). Hoffler was the best at the meet in both the long jump, where she went 18’7 ¾” (5.68m), and in the triple jump, where she reached 39’10 ¾” (12.16m).

Also winning for the Ephs was sophomore Hillary Higgs in the 200 (25.05 seconds), first year Julie Paschal in the high jump (5’5”/1.65m) and the 4x100 meter relay team (48.42 seconds), which just missed a conference record. Senior co-captain Nora Mitchell had a standout performance as she took second place in the 400m hurdles in a time of 65.30 seconds. Maya Harakawa '12 finished fifth in the same event to earn four more points for the Ephs.

The throwing events were dominated by Bates College senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan and Tufts first year Kelly Allen. Duncon won the shot put for the third straight year, tossing the ball 45’6 ½” (13.88m). She added a win in the hammer throw with a 170’10” (52.07m) heave. Allen placed first in the discus throw at 143’5” (43.71m) and in the javelin at 120’6” (36.74m).

Both runners and field athletes performed within the range of the provisional qualifiers for NCAAs, although not all earned places in the rankings high enough to secure entry in the meet. Hoffler was one athlete who positioned herself comfortably in the rankings, garnering a provisional qualifier of  in the long jump and placing herself at the top of the rankings in the triple jump with an automatic qualifier.

Karyn Moss ’12 and Brooke Johnson ’13 also flirted with provisional qualifiers in the triple jump, as Moss cleared 11.53m for 3rd place at NESCACs and Johnson cleared 11.49m to take 4th

Provisional qualifiers were present on the oval, as well. Higgs bettered her previous qualifier in the 200m dash, thought this time is not quite fast enough to put her in the midst of the NCAA field. In the 3000m steeplechase, Sarah Tory ’11 flirted with the provisional time, running 11:15.82, just 2.82 seconds off of the outer limit for the provisional qualifier.

In the mid-distance events, Lizzy Danhakl ’11 doubled in the 1500m and the 800m, running solid times of 4:40.29 and 2:17.50, respectively. Olga Kondratjeva ’10 finished 6th in the 800m, just ahead of Danhakl in 2:16.65.

Elly Teitsworth ’10 and Lauren Goldstein-Kral ’12 worked together in the 10k to capture 3rd and 4th places in 39:00.53 and 39:18.88. Grace Babula ’12 took advantage of her last chance to qualify for Div. III New Englands and ran a personal best of 41:22.56. Distance athletes Bret Scofield ’10 and Annie Dear ’13 took advantage of the week to train through the NESCAC Championship and prepare for Div. IIIs.

The Ephs return to Tufts next weekend for Div. IIIs as championship season gets into full swing.
