Ephs Conquer Season Bests and Qualifying Times at BU, MIT

Boston University Valentine Invitational, Complete Results

MIT Coed Invitational, Complete Results

Boston, MA—This weekend the Williams women traveled to Boston to compete in two separate meets: the Boston University Valentine Invitational and the MIT Coed Invitational. On Friday at BU, several top-notch performances garnered qualifying times for ECACs, Open New Englands, and NCAA Championships. BU’s banked track and the vast Division I competition made for fast times and personal bests. At MIT on Saturday, performances were generally slower than most had hoped for, but athletes remained mentally tough and pulled through with strong performances, including several who had already run at the BU Valentine Invitational the day before.

Jennifer Gossels ’13 qualified provisionally for NCAA Cha mpionships at BU, running a 17:23.67 in the 5k and finishing 8 th in a field of 59 talented athletes. Showing off a winter’s worth of consistent training, Gossels shaved a solid 39 seconds off of her personal best from the first meet of the season, back in December at Smith College. Other mid and long distance performances of note included Olga Kondratjeva ’10 who ran 5:10.25 in the mile, Bret Scofield ’10, running 5:14.99 in the same event, and Tina Meade ’11 ran a 10:24.26 in the 3k to finish 32nd out of 93.

In the sprints, Hillary Higgs ’12 and Elise Johnson ’10 paired up in the 200m dash and used the excellent competition at BU to their advantage. Higgs ran a season best of 25.21 and finished 10th, while Johnson ran 25.66 for 17th. Nora Mitchell '10 ran 1:18.36 in the 500m dash to qualify for Open New Englands.

The MIT meet offered opportunities for both first-place finishes and qualifying times. Highlights included Rebecca Fine '13, who took first in the 600m and qualified for ECACs, and Lizzy Danhakl '11, who won the 1000m race in 3:08.56--an impressive feat considering she also competed in the 800m the previous night at BU. Effua Sosoo '13 took 5th in the 600m and snagged a Div. III qualifier, while Maya Harakawa '12 ran 1:02.86 in the 400m to take 2nd place.

The Ephs travel to University of Southern Maine next weekend to compete in the Division III New England Championships. For a complete list of qualifying standards for the 2010 Indoor Season, click here.
