FREDERICKSBURG, VA – Williams senior Grace Baljon’s quest for a 92nd career victory and the 2010 NCAA Singles title was stopped by junior Julia Browne of Tufts in straight sets – 6-2, 7-5 at Mary Washington University.
Baljon, considered to be the most decorated and honored Eph tennis player in the program’s history, dropped the first set 6-2, but came back stronger in the second and came up just short by the score of 7-5.
The loss gives Baljon an impressive career singles record of 91-23 (.798) playing two years at number two singles and the final two years at number one singles for the Ephs. In addition in doubles play Baljon fashioned a record of 83-20 (.806).
“Grace played well today and when she was able to execute her plan she was able to score points,” noted Eph head coach Alison Swain. “Julia is an excellent player though and she would not let Grace keep to her plan. It was nice that the referee who chaired the match made of point of telling both Grace and Julia it was friendliest championship match he has ever chaired.”
