Ephs finish off Emory, 5-4, for undefeated spring break play

Grace Baljon '10

ATLANTA, GA. – Williams women's tennis (9-0) edged out fifth-ranked Emory (12-4), 5-4, to finish off their swing down South with an unblemished 5-0 record.  The top-ranked Ephs will return home early next week to begin conference play.

"The match tonight was a great win for us," said Williams' head coach Alison Swain.  "Emory is a very tough team competitively, and we truly worked hard for every point we earned."

The Ephs took a pivotal 2-1 advantage heading out of doubles play, which proved crucial as the two teams split the results in singles play.  Cary Gibson and Nikki Reich, and Kristin Alotta and Genny Loomis, took the critical wins at courts one and three.

In singles play, Reich, Alotta, and Annie Hancock were all dominant in straight set victories.  Senior Hancock was particularly strong at court six, posting a 6-1, 6-1 win over the Eagles' Laura Callava.  Gibson and Ashley Parsons could not secure wins at courts two and five, respectively, falling in straight sets.  At court one, with the match already decided, Baljon fell in a super tiebreaker.

"The win was a great finish to a very successful spring break trip for us," continued Swain.  "I am really proud of the team for how they competed in each match this trip.  We still want to improve and will continue to get better in the weeks to come, but we achieved a lot this spring trip and I am thrilled with where the girls are competitively at this point in the season."

Williams will host Tufts on April 11 in their first taste of NESCAC action this spring.  The match is set for 1:00 p.m.
