Ephs start strong on spring break with 9-0 shutout of Sewanee

ATLANTA, GA. – #1 Williams (5-0) opened up their spring break campaign with a definitive 9-0 victory over #20 Sewanee University (9-4) at Woodward Academy in Atlanta, Georgia.  Interestingly, Ephs head coach Alison Swain returned to familiar courts, having taught at the  high school a few years back.

The match was the first of a six-match swing down South in which the Ephs will face off against five nationally ranked Division III schools, and one Division II opponent.

“It is fantastic to finally be playing,” commented Swain.  “Sewanee really puts a lot of balls in play and exposes weaknesses very well, and we did a good job of adjusting and playing smart tennis.”

The Ephs started off the match with three strong doubles wins.  Although four-year All-American Cary Gibson missed today’s match due to an academic commitment, the experienced junior and fellow All-American Grace Baljon filled in for Gibson at the number one singles spot.  Baljon showed that a semester abroad last fall had no affect on her game, dealing a straight set 6-2, 6-3 loss to Sewanee’s number one player, Jordan Casey.

Kri stin Alotta and Ashley Parsons were particularly sharp in their spring debuts.  The freshman, Alotta, lost only one game in the first set before cruising to a 6-0 second set.  Parsons showed her experience at the number four court, losing just one game in both sets for a win.  The remaining Ephs singles players tallied straight set victories as well.

The defending national champions will take on #5 Denison this Friday at 1:00 p.m.
