Ephs Strong on Day 2 of NEWITT

NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Ephs advanced three teams to the semifinals of the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Tennis Tournament (NEWITT) today. Two rounds of competition were held.

“It was a long day of tennis but we fought really hard and played well.” said Coach Alison Swain. “It’s very exciting to have three teams in the semifinals tomorrow.”

The team played well in the Round of 16, with all four teams advancing to the semifinals. The A draw proved tough, with both teams winning by a 2-1 margin. The pairs in the B draw had an easier time, as they refused to drop a match to any of their opponents.

In the quarterfinals, the #1 Williams team of Cary Gibson/Nikki Reich were able to defeat the #2 Amherst duo 2-1. Gibson/Reich are the top seed in the tournament. Unfortunately, the top team from MIT, Leslie Hansen/Anastasia Vishnevetsky, overcame the #2 Eph combination of Annie Hancock/Ashley Parsons. Going into the bout, MIT was seeded third and Williams was fifth. The pair from MIT are two time NEWMAC doubles team of the week for this fall.

In the B draw quarterfinals, Kristin Alotta/Genny Loomis continued their excellent play defeating a team from Wellesley. Alotta and Loomis have not lost a match this entire tournament. Katie Freidman/Caroline Capute, the #4 Williams group had a 2-1 victory over the #3 team from NESCAC rival Bowdoin.

The last day of fall competition for the Ephs tomorrow features a series of classic Williams/Amherst matchups. In semifinal play of the A draw we see #1 Williams (Gibson/Reich) vs. #3 Amherst (Carlissa King/Laken King). The semis of the B draw aree comprised solely of Ephs and Lord Jeffs. To play are #3 Williams (Alotta/Loomis) vs. #5 Amherst (Charlotte Wilinsky/Danielle Erb), and #4 Williams (Freidman/Capute) vs. #4 Amherst (Anuja Ankola/Mimi Bell). All matches go off at 9am Sunday.
