Ephs Solid on Day 1 of Midd Doubles Tournament

MIDDLEBURY, VT - The Ephs tested their new doubles teams against strong competition on the first day of play at the Gail Smith Doubles Tournament held by Middlebury College. The tournament features round robin play on the first day, allowing everybody to play three matches.

“The doubles tournament is fun and a great experience,” said Coach Alison Swain. “Middlebury is giving us a test and some of the best teams in the NESCAC are here including Amherst, Tufts, and Bowdoin.”

Newly crowned ITA Doubles Champs Cary Gibson and Nikki Reich kept up their winning ways, and advanced through bracket play to the quarterfinal round where they won in a tiebreaker. On the way they faced tough competition from the Amherst team of Carlissa King/Anuja Ancola. Gibson and Reich were able to come away with an 8-6 win in that match. In the quarterfinal round, the Eph duo persevered through a tiebreaker and won 9-8(5). They will play in the semi-finals tomorrow.

The first-year team of Taylor French/Kristin Alotta continued their impressive play and went undefeated on the day. Their day included a big 9-8(8-6) win over the Middlebury team of Kurlen/Clare Burke. Unfortunately, they tied with that team in their group standings and lost in a tiebreak based on games lost and were placed in the consolation bracket.

The teams of Annie Hancock/Ashley Parsons, Caroline Capute/Genny Loomis, and Katie Friedman, who partnered up with Tufts’ Katie Pritchard all moved to the consolation round as well.
