Ephs sweep doubles, Beat Vassar 8-1

Poughkeepsie, NY – Women’s tennis (2-0) continued
its winning ways Saturday afternoon, beating the Brewers from
Vassar (0-1) by a score of 8-1.
“Vassar is a very good team,” said Coach Alison Swain.
“We played well - better than in our scrimmages, better than
at Wesleyan. The girls are playing with more confidence and showing
great improvement.”
While the Ephs were challenged at the very top of their line-up,
this match showcased the depth of the team. In doubles play, the
third and fourth pairings of Annie Hancock/Ashley Parsons and
Caroline Capute/Genny Loomis both won in convincing 8-1 victories.
The bottom of the singles ladder also turned in dominating two set
performances. The strength of the entire lineup bodes well for the
rest of the season.
The closest match was at number one doubles where the Eph duo of
Cary Gibson/Nikki Reich beat Nicole Pontee/Jamie Steele 9-7. Down
6-7, the Gibson and Reich faced match game. However, the
unflappable pair were able to tie the match 7-7 and then win the
next two games to secure the doubles sweep.
The Ephs will travel yet again next weekend – this time to
MIT for the International Tennis Association (ITA) Tournament.
