WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Most top-level Division III swimmers and divers ended their season at the NCAA Championships at the University of Tennessee March 23 – 26. However, in search of qualifying times for the U.S. Olympic Trials junior Logan Todhunter and sophomore Caroline Wilson hit the road the weekend of April 8-10 to compete at The Eric Namesnik Michigan Grand Prix at the Canham Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan.
Also in Ann Arbor that weekend were some of the biggest names in USA Swimming. "Tons of the best swimmers in the world were at the meet including Michael Phelps, Ryan Lochte and Jason Lezak on the men's side, Katie Hoff, Natalie Coughlin, Anna Kukors and lots of other past/future Olympians," noted Eph head coach Steve Kuster.
The U.S. the Olympic Trials are considered the fastest meet in the world, faster top to bottom than even the Olympics.
"Both Logan and Caroline competed extremely well and have a ton to be proud of," commented Kuster. "The Olympic Trials will be held in Omaha a year from the end of June."
Between them Todunter (3) and Wilson (2) won five NCAA individual titles while in Tennessee. In Ann Arbor the Eph duo was competing in the long course format of a 50-meter pool instead of the usual 25-yard college format.
"Logan posted a personal best time in her 100 butterfly -- 1:02.35 -- finishing 22nd and less than 4 tenths of a second away from the Olympic Trials cut time," stated Kuster. In subsequent time trials she swam similar times all just over the cut and she also swam to a best time by over a second in the 200 fly, finishing 21st."
"Caroline swam to a personal best by 7 seconds in finishing 6th in the 400 IM," stated Kuster. "Her morning time of 4:53.61 was over 2.5 seconds under (faster than) the Olympic Trials cut time!"
Wilson almost logged another Olympic Trials qualifying time in the 200 IM with a best time of 2:19.65 in the 200 IM (8th place), which was a personal "best time by several seconds and less than 2 tenths of a second short of the Olympic Trials cut time," said Kuster. Wilson also posted a13th place finish in the 400 Free.
Wilson is the second Eph female to qualify for the Olympic Trials joining Lindsay Payne '06 who qualified in the breaststroke.
