Ephs Beat Brown Bears; Guarantee a Spot in ‘A’ Division

Williamstown, MA—In the last home match of the season, the Williams women’s squash team beat out Brown University 6-3, guaranteeing themselves a top eight ranking, and a spot in the ‘A’ Division at Nationals.

What made this victory all the more remarkable was the absence of co-captain Claire Hsu, who due to illness, will not be able to compete in the rest of her senior season. However, as this team has been accustomed to doing all season long, the Ephs stepped up to the challenge, with players 6-10 moving up one spot in the ladder. With the bottom of the ladder having to face this additional task, the top of the ladder took care of business, with the top four players winning their matches. The other two wins came from number nine Julia Reiser and number seven Stephanie Barnet, who both won 3-0.

Players 3, 6, and 9 were first on court, and the quick 3-0 win by Reiser followed by a win by freshman Courtney Bogle at number three sent a strong message. At the number two spot, Jennifer Coxe took the first two games of her match handily, before a lapse in the third gave her opponent a chance to take the game. Coxe went on to take the fourth game 9-1.

A 3-0 win by co-captain Toby Eyre at number one, and the Ephs needed only one more win to take the match, which came from a decisive win by Barnet.

Court four had a harder time, with sophomore Kavitha Mannava and junior Caroline Henry losing to their Brown opponents in five games at the number six and five spots, respectively. However, senior and co-captain Arianna Kourides won her last home match in a hard-fought five game match at number four, giving the Ephs a 6-3 win.

Williams will travel to Wesleyan on Saturday for the annual Little Three tournament.
