Ephs Finish Season Ranked 8th Nationally

Cambridge, MA—Williams women’s squash finishes a successful season ranked number eight nationally, and fulfills their goal of competing in the Howe Cup.
Though a tough weekend saw three losses to strong opponents for the Ephs, the Williams women’s squash team was satisfied with the pay off for their hard work and determination all season. The eighth-seeded Ephs were pitted against number one Princeton in the first round of the tournament and were defeated 8-1. The sole win came from number one Toby Eyre, who defeated Princeton’s Amanda Seibert in three games.
On Saturday morning, Williams met number five Yale, and faced similar challenges with a deep team. Again, Eyre led the team with the only win of the match, playing a close four games with Yale’s Logan Greer. Eyre had lost to Greer earlier in the season in five.
With close games by number two Jennifer Coxe and number five Caroline Henry, the team felt ready to take on number seven Stanford in the 7-8 playoff on Sunday. The team showed improvement from their 8-1 loss just two weeks ago, dropping the 7-2 decision, and playing closer matches throughout the lineup. Coxe, freshman Courtney Bogle, and junior Julia Reiser pushed their opponents to four games at numbers 2, 3, and 9, respectively, while Eyre and junior Caroline Henry recorded wins at numbers 1 and 5.
The Ephs (12-12) finish their regular season
with an 11th consecutive Little Three title, as NESCAC
runner-ups, and with exciting wins over Dartmouth and Brown to
propel themselves into the ‘A’ Division at
Nationals.
Though plagued by injuries and illnesses, including to co-captain
Claire Hsu, who was not able to compete at the end of her senior
season, the team continued to step up to the challenges. The
Ephs’ other senior co-captain Arianna Kourides will be missed
as well, ending her Williams squash career as a consistent and
skilled number four, and having led the squad with her experience
and dedication. Enthusiastic pre-season training and hard work
throughout the season has resulted in the team’s success,
which they hope will transfer over to the Individual championships,
to be held at Williams on February 27th.
