Ephs Fall to Cornell, Take Down Hamilton

Ithaca, NY—The Williams women’s squash team traveled to Cornell and Hamilton this weekend to face a much-improved Big Red squad and the Continentals.

A long day of traveling the night before, and the absence of co-captain Claire Hsu at number five put the Ephs at a disadvantage when they stepped on court to face a team that they lost to 5-4 during the regular season last year and then beat a few weeks later for the Kurtz Cup Championship title at Nationals. Cornell’s much-improved team included two freshmen and a junior transfer in their top nine, while the remaining Big Red players played with a vengeance.

The Big Red proved too much for Williams, with positions three to nine losing in three games. However, the top of the Ephs lineup showed its strength, with number two Jennifer Coxe taking the third and fourth games of her match before falling 9-3 in the fifth. Co-captain Toby Eyre easily handled the Cornell number one, only giving up eight points, and winning the last game 9-0.

Williams then traveled to Clinton, NY to face NESCAC rival Hamilton College. This time the match went in the Ephs favor, with seven of the players winning 3-0. Juniors Caroline Henry and Julia Reiser only gave up one point at positions five and eight, respectively, while senior Stephanie Barnet won all three games 9-0.

The Ephs will face rival Stanford on Friday before heading to Hartford, CT for NESCACs.
