Ephs Struggle Against Stanford and Take Out Tufts
It was an intense afternoon for the
women’s varsity squash team as they faced off against players
from both Stanford University and Tufts University in their first
two matches of the season. Both matches, which were played at the
Simon Squash Center at Williams, were strong signs on of the season
ahead.
First, the Ephs played against the Stanford
Cardinals in an agonizingly close match. The team lost by just one
match for a final score of 5-4. While Catie Warner, Caroline Henry,
and Julia Reiser lost to their opponents in three games, there were
also some far closer defeats. Throughout the match between
Williams’ Jennifer Coxe and Stanford’s Sam Buechner,
the control of the game oscillated between the two players. Coxe
grabbed the first game, lost the next two, came back and won the
fourth 9-1 only to loose in the fifth game by just two points. In
an impressive turn of events, Toby Eyre ’10, beat
All-American and former Junior National Champion, Lily Lorentzen in
just three games. Lorentzen started off with a fight, but was
crushed by Eyre in the last game 9-0. Kavitha Mannava ’11
initiated her college squash career with a win against Karissa Hazy
in four games. Katie Friedman ’11 and Sophie Mason ’10
also played for the Ephs for the first time. This match foreshadows
a very strong season to come, and the team looks forward to playing
Stanford later on in the season.
Head Coach Zafi Levy said, “I cannot be
more proud of our team today. We are short a key player, but we
still played very well and had a great chance to win. Stanford has
improved a lot, but we would love another shot at them later on in
the season.”
The Ephs went on to destroy Tufts later on in
the afternoon. Despite the previous exhausting match, every single
player defeated her Tufts opponent in just three games for a score
of 9-0. Both Ashley Eyre ’08 and Allison Rottkamp ’08
took out their adversaries, Victoria Barbra and Simone Grant,
respectively, without granting a single point. Sophie Mason also
defeated Caroline Choi 9-0, 9-0, 9-0.
