Ephs Have Good Showing at NESCACS

Williams’ women’s squash, the number two seed, had a successful run at the NESCAC tournament this week, held at Trinity College. After cruising through the first two rounds against Bowdoin and Bates, the Ephs met their match against tough Trinity opponents.
Despite getting injured in her first game against Bowdoin, co-captain Catie Warner won her match in four games, then came back to beat a stronger Bates opponent in three games. Other notable performances from the semifinals came from Toby Eyre, Ashley Eyre, Jennifer Coxe, Arianna Kourides, and Claire Hsu, who all beat their Bates opponents without giving up more than three points. All the players won in three games. These two matches demonstrated the growth of the team in just a few short weeks, having beaten Bowdoin 7-2 and Bates 8-1 at their last meetings, in much closer matches.
In the end, however, Trinity truly showed their dominance of NESCACs, beating the Ephs 9-0. But even these scores showed the team’s improvement, with most match results closer than the last meeting with Trinity at the beginning of the season. Especially impressive was the very top and bottom of the ladders, with number one Toby Eyre and number 12 Katie Friedman taking their Trinity players to five games.
Head Coach Zafi Levy said of the match: “We have not lost a match against Bowdoin and Bates in the quarter and semi’s; that was a very impressive performance against two strong programs. The team played great squash all weekend. We look forward to collecting our ninth straight Little Three title next week.”
After a less competitive Little Three tournament on Saturday, the team will have a few quieter weeks of training until nationals at Princeton at the end of February.
