Ephs End Losing Streak, Beat Brown 5-4

Ephs End Losing Streak, Beat Brown 5-4

Williamstown, MA – The Ephs were finally able to convert their last match into a victory over the Brown Bears Wednesday night.

In their last dual match of the season, Williams’ squash found themselves in a familiar situation, tied 4-4 to an Ivy rival for the third time this week. However, unlike the three other 5-4 scores this season, in which the Ephs were on the losing end, the Ephs left Providence with the win.

The top of Williams’ line-up proved too strong for the Bears, with the top four players all earning victories. The players at the numbers one, two, and four positions allowed their opponents only eight points or less.

The bottom of the lineup saw more difficulty, with numbers five, six, and eight positions all losing their matches in three games. After losing the first two games, number seven Claire Hsu won a close third game 9-7, before succumbing to a strong Kali Schellenberg.

The highlight of the evening was number nine Julia Reiser’s match against Sarah Roberts. At 4-4, both teams gathered around the court with Reiser down two games to one. Despite losing to her in a meeting last year at the number twelve position, Reiser demonstrated the improvement in the young Williams’ squash team, battling back and forth with Roberts, winning the fourth and fifth games 10-8 and 9-7, respectively.

Head Coach Zafi Levy said of the match: “A very impressive win after several hard losses. This is only the second time in six years that we have beaten Brown and the first time we have beaten them at Brown. This is an excellent result for the team.”

Co-captain Ashley Eyre agreed. “Brown was our last close dual match of the season and after two heartbreaking losses against Dartmouth and Cornell we stepped it up and finally had a victory. Everyone played their hearts out and we are proud of the entire team.”

The victory was an encouraging one for the team, who has seen three 5-4 matches this season go the other way. Despite the successful night, a 6-3 or better win was required for the Ephs to crack the top eight in the rankings. Yet, the team is still looking forward to competing in the B Division at Nationals, where they can avenge last weekend’s loss against Cornell.
