Ephs Fall to Cornell

Williamstown, MA –Williams women’s squash, ranked eight in the nation, saw “Big Red” last Sunday, as they dropped a close 5-4 contest to number ten Cornell University.

Williams’ women had a slow start to the afternoon, dropping the first four matches on court. Number nine Kavitha Mannava and number eight Allie Rottkamp had quick 3-0 defeats, despite playing long rallies. At the number six position, Caroline Henry gave her opponent a fight, managing to get the third game 10-9. However, both her and number three Jennifer Coxe lost their matches 3-1.

With decisive wins at the number one and two positions, with number one Toby Eyre only allowing Cornell’s Rachel Wagner one point, and solid 3-0 victories at the number seven and four positions, the Ephs found themselves in a familiar situation. Tied four matches apiece and gathered around court number six, just as they had been a few days earlier for the match against other Ivy rival Dartmouth College, all eyes were on number four Arianna Kourides for the second time this week.

However, Cornell’s Alex Cornett’s tight rails and consistent boasts proved too much of a challenge for a quick Kourides, who dropped the match 3-0.

The match was a big disappointment for the women’s squash team, whose chances of playing in the top division of nationals are getting slimmer. The deciding match will be away this Wednesday against Brown University. Brown beat Cornell earlier this week 6-3.

Later that evening, the Ephs took on a much weaker Middlebury team, defeating them 10-0, with eight players giving their opponents no more than five points.
