Ephs Put Together Strong Showing Against USM and Simpson College

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA- The Ephs dominated their home opener earning wins against the University of Southern Maine and Simpson College. USM and Simpson College are traditionally two of the top teams in the country, making today’s match a clash of three of the top teams in Division III.

Wrestling at 149 Corey Paulish was dominant. In his first match Paulish dictated the match. He controlled the entire match and amassed over five minutes of riding time enroute to a major decision over USM’s George Robles, 9-0. Paulish was just as strong in his second match scoring a major decision over Simpson’s Kasey Green, 8-0. Head Coach Dan DiCenzo was ecstatic about Paulish’s effort saying, “Corey was solid all night, and he beat two strong wrestlers without giving up a single point.”

Carl Breitenstein, wrestling at 157 was equally dominant. In his first match he scored an early take down on USM’s Cody Byrd. However, before Breitenstein was able to amass many points the match was cut short because Byrd suffered a severe leg cramp. Breitenstein’s second match went the distance, in the first period Breitenstein opened up a 7-1 lead. After a deadlocked 2nd period Breitenstein began the third period in bottom and earned an escape with twenty seconds left in the period. Coach Dan DiCenzo was pleased with Breitenstein’s effort saying, “Carl went up against two of the top wrestlers at the meet. He beat both of them decisively and really gave our team a boost.”

Ryan Malo, coming off a strong effort at the Midlands tournament maintained his momentum. Malo only needed 1:40 to pin Matthew Bubar of USM. In his second match, Malo wrestled up a weight class against Simpson’s Sam Collora, who had already won on the day. Malo scored a take down fifty seconds into the match. He spent the next two minutes flirting with a pin before finally taking Collora down at 2:50. Coach DiCenzo was impressed with Malo saying, “Malo has been consistently getting pins for us all year. It is great for us to have him as the hammer at the top our lineup.”

Heavyweight Colin Curzi, 184 pound Nate Shippee, and 174 pound Andrew Gatewood all earned victories for the Ephs.

The Ephs cruised past USM 37-15. Coach Dan DiCenzo had this to say about the USM match, “For the past five years USM has been one of the top teams in our conference. This was a great win for our team; we were able to keep our momentum going.” He went on to say, “This was a team effort; guys who typically don’t get to wrestle many matches did very well for us.”

Simpson fell to the Ephs by nearly the same margin, 32-16. Coach DiCenzo saw the match against Simpson College as a great measuring stick for the grapplers. “For the past twenty years Simpson has been one of the best teams in Iowa. As a program we are lucky to have a great relationship with the school and I was pleased that they flew all the way out here to compete. While their lineup has been recently beset by injuries, it is still very strong and provided a great test for us.

The Ephs return to the mats tomorrow January, 5th in the Williams Invitational against six of the top teams in New England.
