PLYMOUTH, NH -- The Eph grapplers ventured up to Plymouth State
University to compete in a quad meet against Plymouth State (ranked
7th in New England), Bridgewater State (ranked 8th in New England),
Norwich, and MIT. The Ephs dominated the day, winning all four of
their matches decisively. As a team Williams lost only six of the
forty bouts they participated in on the day.
The victory was a total team effort, with each of the Eph starters
winning at least one of their matches. Josh Mattana, Kaison Tanabe,
Ces Antista, Dylan Rittenburg, Corey Paulish, Andrew Gatewood, Ryan
Malo, and Tom Foote all went undefeated on the day.
In their first match of the day against Norwich, the Ephs had four
major decision victories by Josh Mattana, Ces Antista (who was
wrestling up a weight class at 141), Corey Paulish, and heavyweight
Tom Foote. The Ephs were also paced by Rob Brackup who defeated
last years number three seed at the conference tournament, Clayton
Brittingham, 7-2. Head Coach DiCenzo was pleased Brackups
performance saying, “Rob looked sharp all day. He is starting
to turn it on and all of his hard work is paying off. He beat two
very good wrestlers today.”
In the second match of the day Josh Mattana got the Ephs off to a
strong start against MIT by defeating Grant Kadokoura, a returning
all conference wrestler, 5-4. Dylan Rittenburg followed up a Kaison
Tanabe tech fall by defeating Tanabe’s brother, Kenzan, a
talented wrestler 4-2.
The Birdgewater State dual was marked by a bitterly contested
match between Eph senior Carl Breitenstein and Frank Camissa. Two
weeks ago in the finals of the Williams Invitational Breitenstein
beat Camissa 7-4. Camissa is a three time Conference Finalist and
All-American. Coach Dan DiCenzo summarized Breitenstein’s
match saying, ““Carl and Frank had the best match of
the day. It was two great wrestlers competing at a high level. Carl
was up by 1 with about 45 seconds left and got reversed. This match
will help him for later in the season. Camissa is a national level
wrestler and those are the type of matches we want to see. Carl is
a competitor and loves to wrestle good kids. After losing to
Camissa he came back in his next match and beat Mike Willey of PSU
the #2 ranked wrestler in the conference.”
The Ephs finished off their day with a shutout victory over
Plymouth state. Corey Paulish won a major decision over eight
ranked Femi Wheeler, 14-1. Paulish’s victory was followed by
the aforementioned Carl Breitenstein who defeated Mike Willey 5-1.
Tom Foote closed out the dual by defeating Jake Gagnon, the third
ranked wrestler in New England, on an overtime takedown. “Tom
did a great job today.” Said Coach DiCenzo, “ We have a
really good situation in our wrestling room at 197 and 285. I try
to stay away from that side of the room because those guys really
get after it. Foote, Malo, Curzi, and Mirkovic are all wrestling
very well.”
Malo Breaks Record
Junior standout Ryan Malo was once again impressive all day,
pinning his four opponents en route to a Williams' record for pins
in a season. Last year Malo had 24 pins on the year, the previous
Williams single season record. With his four pins today he now has
25 pins this season and a record of 28-4. All four losses have been
to Division I wrestlers, but he also has pinned seven Division I
wrestlers. Coach DiCenzo had this to say about Malo, “Ryan is
awesome to be around. He never takes a practice off or an
opportunity to get better. This past week was his best practice
week of the season. He is constantly challenging himself to become
a better wrestler. With all of his success he is still always more
concerned with helping the team and getting everyone around him to
that next level.”
