SPRINGFIELD, MA- On the final day of competition the Williams
College wrestling team successfully defended their NEWA Conference
championship. Their 128.5 points gave them a healthy margin of
victory over runner-up Springfield (100.5) and both Wesleyan and
Johnson &Wales who tied for third place with 95 points.
The Ephs were led by much heralded Junior Ryan Malo who by
virtue of his first place finish now can add the distinction of
being named a two time All-American and co-outstanding wrestler of
the year to his impressive list of accolades. Malo won all four of
his matches by pin-fall and needed only 4:11 to pin Rodger
Williams’ Rodger Cambi in the championship match.
Malo’s victory also gave him an automatic bid to the NCAA
tournament

Malo was joined in the finals by four other Ephs: Ces Antista,
Tom Foote, Carl Breitenstein, and Dylan Rittenburg.
Freshman Ces Antista battled back from an early loss and dominated
the consolation bracket enroute to a rematch against Joe Grippe of
Springfield College. Antista wrestled well in the final but fell
7-4.
Wrestling at 141 Dylan Rittenburg lost an early match to
Trinity’s’ Jacob Gire. Rittenburg then cruised through
the consolation bracket and earned a rematch against Gire in the
semi finals. This time Rittenburg was up to the challenge and
defeated Gire 8-6. This set up a championship match against Matt
Ulrich who prevailed 6-2.
Like Rittenburg, Carl Breitenstein lost early, but bounced back to
a second place finish. In his third match of the tournament he fell
to Springfield’s Joe Archambeau. Breitenstein then had three
straight wins including a 7-3 victory in his rematch against
Archambeau before falling in the finals to Frank Cammisa of
Bridgewater State.

of WNEC in the semi finals. In the consolation finals Foote
defeated Trinity’s Greg Vaughn 5-3 and managed to force a

College’s Kevin Sutherland who eventually went on to finish
in second place.

Rolfe of Wesleyan and settled for 6th place.
174 pound George Sullivan secured a 5th place finish.

and 157 pound Carl Breitenstein. Freshman Ces Antista was named the
first alternate at 133. The Ephs' three NCAA qualifers is a school
record and a reflection of the depth in talent they have shown all
year.
