
WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – This winter on the mat the Williams College wrestling team set a school record for most wins in a season posting a ledger of 20-3 and the Ephs repeated as New England champions, before finishing 23rd at the NCAA Division III Championships. Williams finished 11th in the final national coaches poll.
The Ephs were just as successful in the classroom.
"We had a great season winning back-to-back NEWA championships,"
said Eph head coach Dan DiCenzo. "What I'm most proud of is our
team posted the highest GPA of any NCAA wrestling program in
Division I, II or III. Our kids do a great job balancing their
academics and their wrestling."
Four members of the Eph team earned national academic honors with their selection the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Scholar All-American Team.
All four of the honored Ephs are repeat winners of the
award. Senior Nathan Shippee earned recognition for the third
consecutive year, while senior Carl Breitenstein, junior Josh
Mattana, and junior Corey Paulish earned honors for the second
straight year.
To receive Scholar All-American honors from the NWCA an athlete
must be at least a sophomore, have a 3.2 cumulative GPA and meet
one of the following wrestling performance standards.
The wrestler must be a national qualifier be a conference place
winner, with a minimum of a .500 record, have a 67% winning
percentage, and have competed in a minimum of 50% of the regular
season dates.
For the third consecutive year Williams won the Scholar
All-American Wrestling Team National Championship with the highest
team GPA – 3.54.
