SPRINGFIELD, MA -- After Williams wrestling,
ranked 1st in New England received a first round bye, the Ephs put
togehter three convincing wins to capture the NEWA Dual Meet
Championship held at Springfield College. 2010 marks the first time
the Ephs have won the NEWA Dual Meet Championship.
The Ephs dispatched Bridgewater State 41-6, Rhode Island College
41-0 and defeated the number two team in the region, Johnson &
Wales 34-12, to claim the title.
The Ephs won 25 of the 30 bouts in the championship competition,
including nine wins via a pin.
Five Ephs went 3-0 in the event -- Josh Mattana (125), Dylan
Rittenburg (141), Corey Paulish (149), Carl Breitenstein (157),
George Sullivan (174) and Ryan Malo (197).
Head Coach Dan DiCenzo was pleased with his team’s
performance saying, “Yesterday was a great day for our
program. Our conference is very strong this year and I really
thought we were going to have some tough matches. Our guys really
stepped up and wrestled well. It started with Josh [Mattana] and
Ces [Antista] who went out and beat a number of wrestlers ranked
higher than them and continued down our entire roster. Everyone
worked hard and wrestled well today.”
The Ephs now have a week off before they host a quad meet against
Hunter, NYU, and TCNJ. The showdown is slated for Saturday January
24th at 12 noon.
