Williams Grapplers Grab Four Wins at WPI Tournament
Worcester, Massachusetts -- The Williams Wrestling team traveled to WPI on Saturday to take on a league rivals Trinity, Southern Maine, MIT and WPI. The 20th ranked Ephs continued their impressive season grabbing four crucial wins against four talented squads. The Ephs were led by strong performances by senior Caption Ethan Cohen, Carl Breitenstein, and Ryan Malo, all of whom went 4-0 on the day. Corey Paulish, Mike Penza, and Kyle Ayer also went undefeated.
Ethan Cohen continued his strong senior campaign winning all four of his matches. Cohen now has 109 wins on his career. Passing Tom Prairie '05 for second all time. He now trails Jamall Pollock by five wins for the most wins in Williams wrestling history. Cohen now has a career record of 109-33.
Corey Paulish had a strong day in the 141 pound weight class. Paulish beat three of the top wrestlers of the league.
At 157 Carl Breitenstein continued his impressive season with 4 more wins. Carl beat the fourth ranked wrestler in NEWA Tyler Howe WPI 6-2 in controlling fashion. He also had two pins on the day.
Ryan Malo continued his strong wrestling, upping his record to 21-0 on the year. Malo is now ranked first in NEWA and third in the country at 184. Incredibly Malo had only had 3 of his 21 matches come down to a decision this season.
Mike Penza, James McCarthy, and Kyle Ayer all looked very sharp for Williams. Coach DiCenzo was pleased with their efforts saying, "They executed very nicely and constantly kept pressure on their opponents"
Coach DiCenzo was thrilled the Ephs performance, "Coach Vega and I were very pleased with our team's effort. It is fun to coach a group of student-athletes like this that always put the goals of the team before themselves. That selflessness has been a huge part of us being such a strong team this season. Wrestling is a sport that demands sacrifice and dedication, it makes us happy to see our team constantly supporting one another and trying to get each other better."
