Ephs Finish 3rd at NEWA Dual Meet Tournament

Jon Foster
BRISTOL, RI -- Forth-ranked Rhode island College upset top-ranked Wiliams 23-17 in the semifinals and the Ephs ended up third in the NEWA Duals when they closed out the day with a 36-9 win over Springfield to capture third place.
"I think it is a great day for our wrestling program when we
finish third at our conference dual meet tournament, which ties our
best finish ever, and the team and the coaches are disappointed,"
said co-head coach Dan DiCenzo. "It is gratifying to see all of the
hard work our student-athletes have put in start to pay off with a
10-3-1 overall record, but collectively as a team we know there is
still work to be done to reach our goals in the next month."
Corey Paulish was exceptional all day leading the Ephs with three
big wins over ranked opponents. "Corey continues to improve every
day and is exciting to coach," commented DiCenzo. Ethan Cohen, Carl
Breitienstein, and Dylan Rittenburg all ranked #2 in the conference
all beat the #3 ranked wrestlers in their weight in highly
contested matches.
In the Southern Maine dual meet James McCarthy and Drew Gatewood
came up huge. Each wrestler bumped up a weight class and was able
to come out with a win to ice the match. McCarthy again
bumped up a weight class against Springfield and was able to clinch
the contest for the Ephs.
"We faced three very strong teams in Southern Maine who finished
5th, Springfield who finished 4th, and RIC who finished 2nd," noted
DiCenzo. "We need to continue to get better every day as our
conference is as strong as it has been in years. The next
month of the season should be very exciting."
Johnson & Wales edged Rhode Island College 18-17 to win the NEWA Duals.
The Ephs return to action on Wednesday night at 7:00 PM when they
host Springfield in a dual match that will be a live video webcast
from Lasell Gym.
