BRIDGEWATER, MA - The Ephs proved themselves today against the toughest competition in New England, finishing third overall at the NEWA Dual Meet Tournament.  After losing to Bridgewater State 25-12 earlier this week, the Ephs bounced back to defeat the Bears 21-16 in the consolation final.

Williams, ranked sixth in New England coming into the tournament, defeated the third and fifth ranked teams on their way to a third place finish.  In the first round, the Ephs faced Coast Guard for the second time in four days.  Again Williams was victorious, benefitting from four Coast Guard forfeits.

In the second round, the Ephs gave a convincing performance taking down third ranked Roger Williams University, 34-7.   The match was never in doubt, as the Ephs took a commanding 28-0 lead with a pin by Doug Washington '08 over the number three seed in New England, Dan Zotollo.

In the semifinals, Williams fell to the second seed in New England, Johnson and Wales University, 25-9.  The Ephs were up 9-3 before giving up 22 straight points to the Wildcats.  Despite some hard fought matches, the Ephs could not overcome the powerful second half of the JWU lineup with all five wrestlers in the top five in New England.

For the consolation final, the Ephs got a rematch with New England's fifth ranked Bridgewater State. After losing to Bridgewater just four days ago, the Ephs came out on fire, jumping out to a 12-0 lead.  Tri-Captain Ethan Cohen '09 started the Ephs off with a hard-fought 4-1 victory over Eric Rosado.  Next, the freshmen Corey Paulish gained a big five points for the Ephs, tech-falling Eric Coughlan 17-2 in just four minutes.  Sophomore Dylan Rittenburg got his third win of the day defeating Justin Thomas by major decision, 8-0, garnering four more points for Williams.  At 149 pounds, Tri-Captain Nick Miragliuolo '08, the second seed in New England, lost a tight 6-3 decision to Frank Cammisa, the number one seed.

At 157 pounds, Carl Breitenstein '10 pulled out a 14-12 victory over John Marsh, after losing to Marsh 10-8 earlier in the week. Washington got another big victory for the Ephs, defeating Mike White, 2-0.  Andrew Gatewood followed with another close 12-11 win over Zachary Bates to seal it for Williams at 21-3.

Coach Dan DiCenzo said of his team's performance, "All of our hard work and effort really paid off today.  We couldn't have wrestled better all day."  The matches today show improvement by the Ephs even since their matches this Wednesday.

The Ephs will try to carry the momentum from today's matches into Wednesday at Springfield College.
