6 Ephs earn IWLCA regional honors

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Six members of the 2010 Williams women’s lacrosse team (12-7) that won the school’s first NESCAC title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament have earned regional honors from the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA).

Earning First Team All-Berkshire Region honors are senior defender Quinn Brueggeman (Durham, NH ), goalie Julia Schreiber (Cockeysville, MD), first year midfielder Sam Weisnstein (Marblehead, MA), and senior attack Whitney Thayer (Lancaster, PA), while sophomore attacks Margie Fulton (Wellesley, MA) and Kaitlin Ellis (Darien, CT) were accorded Second Team recognition.

Previously Schreiber earned All-NESCAC First Team and Player of the Year honors, while Brueggeman and Thayer earned Second Team honors. Sam Weinstein was named the NESCAC Rookie of the Year.

Schreiber played nearly every minute of every regular season game this season and led the league in save percentage, boasting a career-best .531 save rate to go along with an 8.59 goals against average (4th NESCAC) and a 12-6 overall through the NESCAC Tournament. She has started 52 of the 53 games she has played in three years and has a save percentage of .506. She has allowed 501 goals and stopped 513 and she owns a goals per game average of 9.63 and a won-lost record of 31-22.

Weinstein was the Ephs leading scorer and tied for first among all conference players in goals with 49 tallies through 18 games. She also accumulated 23 ground balls, 13 draw controls, and six caused turnovers, and was 15-for-26 on free position attempts heading into the NCAA Tournament action.

Brueggeman tallied one goal this season and was second on the team in ground balls with 30. She also contributed 9 draw controls and forced 17 turnovers. Over her career Brueggeman snared 71 ground balls, 32 draw controls and forced 35 turnovers, while scoring three goals.

Thayer tied with Margie Fulton for second on the team in goals scored (31) and she also chipped in with two assists for 33 points (4th on team). She led the Ephs in draw controls with 48 and she recovered 13 ground balls and caused 5 turnovers. In her four years Thayer fired home 93 goals, recorded 14 assists and had a career point total of 107. She also won 103 draw controls, picked up 47 ground balls and caused 25 turnovers.

Fulton’s 31 goals and 10 assists gave her 41 total points, which was third best on the team. She also collected 14 ground balls, 6 draw controls and registered 4 caused turnovers. In just two years Fulton has scored 77 goals and assisted on 36 for a total of 113 points.

Ellis had a breakout season as the Ephs offensive trigger netting 16 goals and recording a team-high 33 assists for a total of 49 points. Ellis also added 22 ground balls, 22 draw controls and caused 22 turnovers. Ellis now has scored 21 goals and assisted on 46 goals for 67 total points in just two seasons. She has also corralled 31 grounds balls 33 draw controls and forced 32 turnovers.
