Williams Continues Six-Game Winning Streak With 13-8 Victory Over Springfield

Box Score

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA––Williams (9-4) extended its win streak to six today when it defeated Springfield (7-5) 13-8. Today’s victory is the third time that Williams has beaten the Pride in as many years. Sophomore Margie Fulton and freshman Sam Weinstein led the Eph offense scoring four and five goals, respectively. Julia Schreiber faced twenty shots and made twelve saves.

Williams started the game flying, scoring three unanswered goals in the first nine minutes. Fulton scored her first goal of the game thirty seconds in on a pass from classmate Katie Ellis. Senior Tina Nawrocki put one away a few minutes later with help from sophomore Meera Sivalingam.Weinstein rounded out the first offensive surge with an unassisted, hockey-style goal scored on the ground.

Springfield managed to slip one past Williams goalkeeper Julia Schreiber three minutes later, but Freshman Nicolle Perry score after making a nice midfield rush. The Ephs and the Pride would exchange goals for the rest of the half, with senior co-captain Whitney Thayer, Weinstein, and Fulton each scoring once more before the close of the half. At half time the score was 7-4 in the Ephs favor.

Head Coach Chris Mason observed that her team “came out strong and played well in the beginning, but we didn’t maintain that level of play throughout the game.

Fulton started off the second half the same way she started, netting the Ephs’ eighth goal in the first three minutes, with senior Tracey Ferriter assisting on the goal. Springfield answered with five goals in thirteen minutes, with Fulton and Weinstein breaking up the Pride offensive.

Mason was not pleased with the Ephs’ “ball control,” believing that the team could have been “tougher defensively and passed better.” She also thought that Springfield had a “different look with different kinds of shooters than what we’re used too. Schreiber adjusted well and did a good job in net.”

With the score at 10-7 and 9:42 left to play, Springfield forward Allie Davis scored the Pride’s last goal of the game. In a sudden offensive effort, Weinstein scored her fourth and fifth goals of the game, solidifying the Ephs’ lead and bringing the score to 12-8. Sivalingam assisted on Weinstein’s fourth goal.  Senior Whitney Kelly rounded out the Ephs’ offense scoring the thirteenth goal with help from Fulton.

Mason said that “Margie and Sam played well” and also thought that “the midfield worked very hard.” She said that senior Tracey Ferriter, junior Anne Marie Burke, and sophomores Ellis and Sivalingam “did a good using their speed and working through the midfield.”

The Ephs return to conference play this Saturday when they take on number 4 Bowdoin at 12pm.
