Ephs fall to Elmira 5-3

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Williams College women’s ice hockey team (0-2-0) fell to Elmira College (5-1-0), by a score of 5-3, in the consolation game of the Panther/Cardinal Classic.
In the first period of the game, Williams sophomore Tracey Ferriter put the Ephs ahead, following a perfectly executed two-on-one with junior Sam Tarnasky at 14:24.
The Soaring Eagles, however, quickly responded in the second period, scoring three goals in the first ten minutes. The first goal was scored only 2:49 into the period when Jenna McCall converted on Tiffany Hart’s assist. Junior Kayla Coady recorded the second goal unassisted at 7:32, while sophomore Lauryn DePaul took advantage of a power play to score the third at 9:03.
In the final period, Elmira once again put pressure on the Ephs, scoring within the first minute of the period. Coady recorded her second goal of the game, bringing the score to 4-1. Yet Williams continued to battle, coming back to score two more goals. Senior captain Caralyn Quan capitalized on a power play to score unassisted at 9:25. Four minutes later, sophomore Kait O’Brien found the net, off assists from Ferriter and Tarnasky. Elmira’s Farren Hart scored the final goal of the game at 17:48, assisted by Tiffany Hart and Coady.
Junior goaltender Kate Schwed recorded 31 saves in her first complete collegiate game for Williams. Coach Shannon Bryant was pleased with Schwed’s performance, remarking that, “Kate played well for us today.”
Elmira goaltender Cara McGurry improved to 3-0-0 with 23 saves.
Of the game, Bryant said, “I am happy with the way we battled back and gave ourselves a chance in the last period. It was a good start for us. We did a pretty decent job battling and being competitive.”
Looking ahead, Bryant remarked, “We came out with a strong team effort both days this weekend. I think this is a good start to go into next weekend with.”
The Ephs will open at home next Saturday against Hamilton at 3:00 pm.
ICE CHIPS: The Eph’s Tracey Ferriter was named to the Panther/Cardinal Classic All-Tournament Team. “Tracey had a very good weekend,” said Bryant of her sophomore forward.
