WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Scoring four goals in the third period, the Williams women’s ice hockey team won its second game of the weekend with a 6-1 decision over Buffalo State this afternoon. The Ephs improve to 3-15-2 with the win, while the Bengals fall to 5-11-3.

The Ephs jumped out ahead halfway through the first period when junior Catherine Mullen sent the puck flying over the right shoulder of Bengal goaltender Kristilynn Reed. Putting the Ephs up 1-0, Mullen was assisted by junior Joey Lye and sophomore Kait O’Brien. Buffalo State responded before the end of the period when Melissa Jeckovich knocked in the puck, following a scramble in front of the goal. Scoring on the power play, Jeckovich was assisted by Marissa McMullan and Kristin Bozek.

The back-and-forth nature of the first period continued in the second, as both teams recorded several shots on goal. Williams, however, pulled ahead at 14:11 when a hard shot from first year Steph Berger recaptured the lead for the Ephs. Junior Sam Tarnaksy and sophomore Tracey Ferriter picked up assists on the play.

Holding onto their lead in the third period, the Ephs came out to score four more goals. Scoring early in the period, sophomore Torrey Taussig netted her first of two goals for the Ephs at 2:33. Tarnasky followed with a goal of her own at 8:52, having converted a pass from junior Joey Lye to extend the Ephs’ lead to three. Senior Allie Morrow scored next for Williams when she redirected sophomore Kait O’Brien’s shot on goal. Also assisting on the power play goal was Allison Page. A mere 19 seconds later, Taussig found the back of the net for her second goal of the game. She was assisted by Morrow and Lye. With senior goaltender Denise McCulloch making a glove save at the buzzer, the Ephs cemented their 6-1 victory.

Allowing only one goal, McCulloch made 28 saves in goal for the win, while Reed turned aside 44 shots for the Bengals.

Looking ahead, Coach Shannon Bryant said, “It will be nice to get on a roll here for the next couple of weeks.”

The Ephs play again on Friday, February 15 at 7:00 pm against NESCAC archrival Amherst College.
