WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – The Williams College women’s golf team kicked off the Williams Invitational tournament today at the Taconic Golf Club. The Ephs swung a 314 to head into day two in second place above St. Lawrence University (319) and Wellesley (327), and just behind Amherst (308).
It was a beautiful sunny day in Williamstown, though some pin placements proved to be challenging. "Overall it was a great day to play,” said head coach Erika DeSanty.
This was the first opportunity for the Ephs to compete on their home course since last fall. The entire team was excited to contribute and it showed. Despite the second place finish, their score of 314 is a new team record. "To have our entire team on the course competing today was truly special for me,” said coach. Williams standouts today include seniors Kait O’Brien (88), Anne O’Leary (81), Mary Gelber (80), freshman Becky Miller (78) and freshman Victoria Student, who shot a 75 to tie for second individually with Flora Weeks and Keely Levins of Middlebury.
“I am very pleased with our play today. This is exactly the type of play we need and expect from our top five players. Victoria was outstanding and for a first year to be such a great leader is not only impressive, but very exciting for the future of our program."
The second and final day of competition resumes tomorrow, April 25 at noon.
