MIDDLEBURY, VT -- The Williams women’s Golf team ended day one at the Middlebury Invitational in second place out of seven teams, five strokes behind Amherst. The Ephs shot a 323 overall, which is their best single day score this season.
The rain held off this morning and despite cloudy weather, playing conditions were mostly pleasant. The course was in extremely good shape and the greens were surprisingly fast.
Anne O’Leary led the Ephs with a 77 from the number one spot. Freshman Victoria Student shot an impressive 79 and Mary Gelber played number two and carded an 80. Senior Kaitlyn O’Brien contributed an 87 and freshman Becky Miller finished with an 88.
“Anne continues to set the tone for us, leading by example every round," said DeSanty. “We put ourselves in a great position going into tomorrow and I am confident if we play as steady as we did today and improve our putting a bit we will finish well.” To overtake Amherst tomorrow, the Ephs will have to adjust their putting to the tricky greens.
O'Leary is one shot back of Hayley Milbourn of Anherst and Alex Irish of Mount Holyoke for top honors and tied for second in individual play. Victoria Student is tied for 5th, while Mary Gelber is tied for 10th.
The seven teams will tee off tomorrow morning for the final round of 18 holes of the Middlebury Invitational.
