Worcester, MA – Williams women’s
crew had another victorious weekend on Lake Quinsigamond. The
Williams 1V, 2V, 3V, and Varsity 4 all took first place, while the
Novice 4 came in second to Holy Cross.
Though Amherst College did not show up, the Little Three regatta
continued as planned as Williams faced off against Wesleyan in the
1V and the 2V. The 3V raced the crew’s perennial rival,
Trinity. Crews from Connecticut College, Ithaca, Tufts, Holy Cross,
Colby, UNH, and WPI rounded out the event, for a day of
well-populated races.
The 3V started the day off right for Williams, coming in at 7:08.3
in the light tailwind, trouncing Trinity’s 7:24.1. Two-seat
Nora Kern ’12 touted the 2,000 meters as “the best race
of the season for our boat. We also posted the smallest margin
between ourselves and the 1V yet.” Three-seat Rachel Hudson
’10 said that despite a rocky start, the crew solidified with
a move at the 400-meter mark, passing the Donohue Rowing Center, in
which the boat “took several seats in just a few
strokes.”
The varsity eight came next, focused on beating Ithaca and rowing
with intent and power. The 1V accomplished its goals, achieving a
time of 6:43.1, 13.7 seconds faster than second-place Ithaca,
solidifying its spot as one of the top (if not the top!) crew in
New England. According to coxswain Becca Licht ’11,
“Our race plan was to focus on shutting the door on our
competition through the middle thousand, by keeping a strong rate
and rhythm while being really aggressive.” The crew came up
past Ithaca by the 700-meter mark, and from there on out powered
through to widen the gap between the two bats.
The novice four, made up of four frosh rowers who had raced in the
3V earlier in the day were unable to overcome UNH, and came in
second with a time of 8:07.3, over third-place Holy Cross’s
8:43.5.
The 2V had an excellent race, posting a time of 6:47.9, beating
second-place Ithaca (7:07.7) by nearly 20 seconds. The 2V’s
time made it the second-fastest women’s boat on the water on
Saturday, behind Williams’ own 1V. The 2V’s goal was to
have a powerful start, and establish a solid base through the
middle thousand meters, which they executed well, building on a
good rhythm and some excellent power.
Finally, the varsity four finished up the racing for Williams,
coming in with a time of 7:44.3 to beat Conn College’s
7:51.3. The boat focused on connecting well as a crew and rowing a
powerful, technically clean, and long stroke, and the work showed
in the victory.
After a successful showing at the regatta formerly known as the
Little Three, Williams returns to its home course,
Pittsfield’s Lake Onota, before heading back to Quinsigamond
for the New England Rowing Championships. The crews will surely be
working hard this week to prepare for the beginning of championship
season, and intersquad racing will play a large role.
On Onota, the crews will face Ithaca once again, as well as rival
Bates, and Div-III competitors Coast Guard and Marist.
