Williams Women Capture Donohue Cup, Remain Undefeated at Worcester

Photo Album by John McClellan

WORCESTER, MA -- Despite (or some might say because of!) the choppy conditions, Saturday was another red-letter day for the Williams women at Lake Quinsigamond. Six Williams boats raced against crews from Simmons, Conn College, and WPI. Continuing off of the success of last weekend’s race on Quinsigamond, the Williams women again swept their races. The first varsity eight also brought home the Donohue Cup, reflecting their win over WPI.

The first race of the day was the varsity four, in which Williams had two entries. The women stepped up to the challenge, and came in first and second. The 1V4+ posted a time of 7:44.0, with the Williams B 4+ coming in at 8:00.2, only 1.5 seconds faster than third place Conn College, giving hem a good race down the course. WPI rounded out the field with an 8:23.6 on their home course.

The Williams first varsity eight got on the water admidst a strong cross wind and performed well to end with a time of 6:50.7, ahead of second place Simmons’ 7:13.3. WPI came in third with a 7:25.9, and presented the Donohue Cup (awarded for the fastest racer among Williams, WPI, and MIT) to captains Sarah Ginsberg ’10 and Julia Haltermann ’10 at the end of the racing day.

The second varsity eight had an excellent race as well, posting a fast time of 6:55.8, putting a big margin on second place Simmons, who finished the two-thousand meter course with a time of 7:27.2. Despite the conditions, the 2V had a strong, fast start, and settled into a strong base rhythm, and is looking forward to continuing to put upward pressure on the 1V.

The 3V8, made up mostly of women who raced in the fours event earlier in the morning, also took first place, with a time of 7:26.5, ahead of Simmons by a margin of just over fifty seconds.

Finally, Williams entered another fours event, racing rowers from the 2V and coxswain Liz Zhu ’11 from the 1V4+. The four came in first after being a length down off the start, and making up ground quickly in order to pull away.

Overall, the Williams women remained dominant at Quinsigamond, and the crew is looking forward to its second week of training on Lake Onota before heading back to Quinsigamond once again for the regatta formerly known as the “Little Three” this weekend.
