Asst. Coach Brad Hemmerly Named Interim Head Women’s Crew Coach at Williams

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA -- Williams College will look inside before looking outside to replace Justin Moore who has left Williams to head up the women’s rowing program at Division I Syracuse University.

Brad Hemmerly, an assistant to Moore the past two years, will get a year to showcase his skills and leadership abilities as the Ephs interim head coach. As is custom at Williams, a national search will be conducted in the spring to select a head coach of the Eph women rowers.

It was not that long ago that Hemmerly, an Ohio native, had never heard of Williams rowing, but he got an eyeful when he attended the ECAC Championships with his Ohio State teams and saw Williams just run away with almost every race. “I remember thinking – who is this crew that is just dominating every race,” recalled Hemmerly.  “It was Williams.”

Shortly thereafter he got a chance to join the staff at Williams. “Brad has been like a son to me,” notes Moore. “He is at a good place in his career for this opportunity and I think he will show over the year that he is worthy of the job.”

Brad Hemmerly

Hemmerly is entering his third year at Williams and brings the knowledge of how to run a large, nationally competitive organization, and how to coach multiple crews to championship level performances. He arrived at Williams for the fall of 2008 as the assistant coach and was charged with the task of heading up recruiting, developing freshmen, and molding walk-on athletes into nationally competitive rowers.

Hemmerly has met and exceeded all of the challenges. His Eph crews have gone undefeated and assisted the Williams program in capturing the New England Rowing Conference Championship, ECAC National Invitational Championship, and the NCAA National Championship Team and Varsity Eight titles.

Williams women’s crew is in the midst of an unparalleled streak -- winning five consecutive NCAA Rowing Championships in NCAA Division III. Overall the Ephs have won six NCAA titles, including the first one offered by the NCAA in 2002.

In addition to coaching at Williams, Hemmerly spent a portion of the summer as an assistant coach at the US Rowing Junior Women’s Development Camp. The goal of the US camp was teaching basic boat moving skills and giving the developing young athletes important information to aid their improvement throughout the coming year

Prior to arriving at Williams, Hemmerly was an assistant coach with the women’s club program at his alma mater, The Ohio State University, for three years. He led the novice crews to podium finishes at every major regatta and finished his final season at OSU by leading the Women’s Varsity Eight to gold at the inaugural ACRA Championship.

During his tenure at OSU, his crews not only won medals at SIRA, Dad Vails, and ACRA, they also won the 2007 Dad Vail Women’s Team Championship and the 2008 ACRA Women’s Team Championship.

As a rower at Ohio State Hemmerly was elected captain an unprecedented three times, raced in the Varsity Eight, and was awarded the "Scarlet and Grey Award,” which is presented to the oarsman who inspires teammates and never loses sight of the fact that success is dependent upon the unity and commitment of the team. Hemmerly carries the Scarlet and Grey values with him in his coaching.

This year at Williams Hemmerly is looking forward to making further progress on the development of the Eph program and continuing to race at the highest level. “Being welcomed into and accepted as a part of the Williams crew family the past two years has been a tremendous experience,” says Hemmerly. “I’m glad that I will be able to continue working with the dedicated athletes, parents, and alums who have made Williams crew so successful year in and year out. There is a strong foundation laid already and we are looking forward to taking on new challenges as we continue to move forward. Great things are happening with Williams crew.”

Hemmerly is a 2007 graduate of Ohio State University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.
