SARATOGA, NY – The Williams women’s crew ended their season on a high note at the Head of the Fish Regatta with the novice women sweeping their events, taking first in the eight event and first and second in the four event in their racing debut.
In the first event of the day for the women, the novice racers, all women in their first year of collegiate rowing, got things started with a dominant performance in the novice four race. The women’s A four, stroked by Emma Pelegri-O’Day ’12, cruised to victory in 13:13, with a commanding 33 second win. Edging out third place SUNY Buffalo “A” (13:49), was the Williams B four, stroked by Alison Hart ’12, taking second place in 13:46.
The novice women followed up their stellar performance in the fours with another victory in the novice eight event. With Sara Wallace ’12 in the stroke seat, the Williams novice rowers took a nine second win over runner up Cornell University (12:57), covering the roughly 3.5K course in 12:48 and defending the collegiate novice eight title secured by last year’s Williams novice women in the same event.
The Williams varsity eight finished the fall season undefeated with a win over William Smith in the collegiate eight event. The 1V, coxed by Becca Licht ’11 this weekend, turned in another strong performance, securing the victory with a 16 second. The Williams 2V, rowing in a new lineup and competing in the collegiate JV eight event, took second to SUNY Buffalo with only four seconds separating themselves from first place. The Ephs also showed their prowess in the varsity fours event, with their three boats taking first, third, and seventh.
Williams ends a very successful fall campaign with solid results plenty of motivation for winter training, and a very positive outlook for the spring 2009 season where they will open their season with their annual spring break training trip to Mrytle Beach, SC.
