Williams battles to 6th place finish at Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY, VT – The Williams College Ski Team finished regular season racing today with the conclusion of the 2011 Middlebury College Winter Carnival. Finishing in 6th place overall, the Ephs had another mixed day on the slopes and trails. In what has become a trend for the season, the women’s Alpine and men’s Nordic teams were the performers of the day. The format for today’s Nordic races was a sprint relay in the freestyle technique consisting of each member of a three-person team completing three separate 1-kilometer laps. Capitalizing on a tag-zone blunder by Middlebury that resulted in disqualification of all of the host college’s teams in the event, the Ephmen contingent of Keith Kantack ’11, Evan Dethier ’11 and Phil Tosteson ‘13 surged to 4th overall. The Dartmouth men won. Meanwhile, in the giant slalom on the slopes of the Middlebury Snow Bowl, the Alpine ladies also put together a fourth place effort. Geordie Lonza ’13 led the charge in 6th with Laurel Carter ’12 behind her in 14th and first-year Shannon Campbell in 20th to fill out the score sheet.

The Williams men, also competing in giant slalom, fought for a 9th place finish on the day. Will Hadden ’12 came across the line in 23rd while first-year Alex Jerred and senior captain Alex Reeves placed 30th and 39th, respectively. The University of Vermont emerged victorious in both Alpine events today. Rikert Touring Center was not kind to the Williams Nordic women in their relay race: the team of seniors Sarah Tory, Madeline Wendt and Kirsten Johnson struggled to 9th place overall. The University of New Hampshire ladies carried the day. For the first time this EISA season, UVM did not come out on top for the weekend: the Dartmouth College Green edged the Catamounts by a slim margin to take their first carnival victory of the year. Heading into next weekend’s Eastern Skiing Championships at Bates, UVM looks to regain its winning form. Next weekend marks the end of qualification for the upcoming NCAA Skiing Championships as well. With the rankings somewhat solidified, Williams looks to send several racers to March’s national event in Stowe, VT.
