STOWE, VT – The 2011 University of Vermont Winter Carnival ended today with the Williams College Ski Team in 5th place. In what is surely the best skiing Eph performance in recent memory and, according to coach Ed Grees, a first in Williams women's Alpine skiing history, the Ephwomen took took 1st in today's slalom. More impressive still was that the blue ribbon marked the first time this year that a UVM Alpine team did not emerge victorious in an event. Laurel Carter '12 led the way in 2nd with Annie Leiter '13 in 5th and first-year Shannon Campbell in 12th. Men's Nordic was the other top Williams effort of the day. With Dimitri Lüthi '12, Keith Kantack '11 and Philip Tosteson '13 coming in at the 16th, 19th and 26th positions, the men's Nordic team placed 4th as a team. Despite a victory by UVM's Scott Patterson, whose sister Caitlin won the women's contest, the Dartmouth men took today's 10 km Nordic race.
The Alpine men, competing on the slopes of Spruce Peak along with the women, took 7th as a team in slalom for the day, as a result of the 19th, 20th and 24th place finishes by Jeff Putnam '11, Sean Cummiskey '12 and Alex Reeves '11. The UVM Alpine men took first place, contributing to UVM's home carnival win. In the wake of Friday's lackluster performances, Nordic coach Fisher expected better results from his athletes in today's events on the trails around the Trapp Family Lodge. In the women's 5 km race, seniors Sarah Tory, Madeline Wendt and Kirsten Johnson took 20th, 31st and 32nd place to give the Nordic women an 8th place finish in the team standings. The UVM women dominated the podium and won the event. The EISA Carnival circuit comes to Hanover, NH next weekend with the Dartmouth Winter Carnival. Stay tuned!
