
HANOVER, NH – Williams just edged out Bates College by half a point—575 to 574.5—to take fifth place at the Dartmouth Carnival. The men’s nordic team led the group again with their fifth place showing in the 15K freestyle race.
Keith Kantack ’11 had the best race of his career with a 12th place result, hanging onto the lead pack throughout most of the race and finishing just 32 seconds off the the pace of the winner. Alex Taylor ’10 and Sam Kapala ’09 closed out the scoring for the Ephs, finishing just four seconds apart in 20th and 21st place respectively. Erik Anderson ’12 took 28th place with Evan Dethier ’11 four seconds back in 33rd place. The men amassed 73 points good enough for fifth place as a team.
The men’s alpine team put three skiers in the top sixteen to finish sixth, just four points out of fourth. Alex Dyroff ’10 led the way in eighth place with Sean Cummiskey ’12 backing him up in 13th place. Eric Mann ’09 took 16th place. Jeff Putnam ’11 finished 31st, with Jim Whitledge ’09 in 35th place. Eirik Burrass ’09, despite a strong first run, did not finish his second run.
The women’s nordic team had a tougher day and placed eighth as a team, with Alice Nelson as the team’s top finisher in 22nd place. Kirsten Johnson ’11 placed 24th, with Holly Whiney ’12 in 34th place. Liz Kantack ’09 was 43rd and Sarah Tory ’11 wrapped it up in 44th.
Kelsey Levine ’10 led the women’s alpine team once again with her 22nd place finish. Emily Porter ’10 and Kelly Kirpatrick ’09 followed right behind in 25th and 26th place respectively. Annie Hanson ’11 placed 41st, while Laurel Carter ’12 and Hannah Mangham ’12, both with strong first runs, did not finish their second run. The women’s alpine team placed seventh overall.
The Ephs return to action next weekend at the Middlebury Carnival.
