Ephs notch split with Keene State

KEENE, NH - Senior Taryn Goodman was 2 for 4 with 4 RBI in the second game of a doubleheader Wednesday, helping the Williams College to an 8-7 victory and split at Keene State.

The host Owls scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning of the first game to pull out a 3-2 victory. But Williams bouncd back with a 10-hit attack in the nightcap, then held off a Keene rally for the one-run win.

The Ephs improved to 15-15 overall. They host Middlebury for a single game Friday at 5 p.m. Keene moved to 14-6 with the split.

"We made a couple of key mistakes in each game, and if we're going to win on a consistent basis, we can't do that," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "At the same time, we're continuing to learn and we're battling."

Despite the heartbreaking game one loss, the Ephs came out and put a three-spot on the board in the top of the first of game two. Joey Lye, who went 4 for 7 in the doubleheader, led off with a single and promptly stole second. Becky Sansone scored Lye with an RBI-single to right. With two outs, Goodman singled down the left field line, and Sansone scored when an error was made on the play. Mary Gelber drove home Goodman with an RBI-single.

The Williams lead was 5-4 entering the top of the fourth. Sansone led off with a double and Katie Powers beat out an infield single to shortstop. After a fielder'c choice erased Sansone at third, Goodman rocketed a three-run home run over the fence in left-center field for an 8-4 lead.

Keene State clawed its way back to within a run and placed the tying run on second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but Eph first-year Mary Beth Daub induced back-to-back groundouts to end the contest and earn a save.

Williams first-year Caitlyn Cain was the winner, allowing 11 hits and six earned runs over five-plus innings. Lye was 2for 4 with two runs scored, Sansone 2 for 3 with an RBI and two runs scored and Gelber 2 for 4 with an RBI.

In the first game, the Ephs led 2-1 after six innings. A run in the sixth put Williams up. Lye led off the frame with a double. Sansone was hit by a pitch. Goodman then gave the Ephs the lead with an RBI-single.

Liz Mroczka led off the Keene seventh with a double. Julia May then reached on an error. Allie D'Amato's single to right field scored Mroczka with the tying run. A groundout put runners on second and third with one out.

Herman then replaced Daub, who started, with senior Margaret Ryan. Ryan walked Jess Starkey to load the bases before allowing a game-winning RBI-single to Katie Allenson.

Daub went 6 1/3 innings, allowed five hits and no walks while striking out five.
