
ORANGE, CA -- Morgan Simpson fired a complete-game two-hitter Tuesday as the Williams College softball team took the opening game of a twinbill via a 6-3 score over Willamette. The Ephs dropped a 12-0, five-inning mercy rule affair to defending national champion Linfield in their second game f the day.
Williams plays twice again Wednesday, facing Whitworth at 1 p.m. PST and Concordia at 5:45 p.m. PST.
The Ephs put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first inning against Williamette, and allowed Simpson to do the rest.
Joey Lye got things started with a lead-off single. After an out, Katie Powers reached on a fielder's choice when Lye beat a throw to second. Libby Copeland-Halperin was hit by a pitch, and Simpson helped herself with an RBI-single. With two outs and the bases loaded, sophomore Mary Gelber lined a three-run single to left and later came around to score on a wild pitch.
Simpson made it all stand up, allowing just two hits over seven innings and three runs, all unearned, while walking one and striking out six.
Lye went 2 for 2 with a run scored and a double. Simpson was 2 for 3 with an RBI and a run scored.
In the nightcap the Ephs were limited to just one hit, a single by Copeland-Halperin. Margaret Ryan started and took the loss, tossing one inning and allowing two earned runs.
