Fowler-Cornfeld no-hitter highlights Ephs' sweep

ORANGE, CA -- One fantastic display of power pitching was met by one memorable display of power as the Williams College softball team swept a pair of games at the Sunwest Tournament Friday to improve to 5-3 on the season.
Williams opened the day with a mercy-rule (5 inn.) 10-0 win over Knox College as junior right-hander Emily Fowler-Cornfeld tossed a no-hitter. The Ephs completed the day with an 11-6 victory over La Sierra College in which they crushed four home runs -- two by junior lead-off hitter Joey Lye.
"It was a good day all around," Ephs head coach Kris Herman said. "We're striving for perfection so obviously we have work left to do, but today was good."
In the opener the Ephs jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the top of the first, scored three more times in the second and put the game away with a four-run third. Lye was 2 for 3 with a walk and three runs scored while sophomore Becky Sansone went 2 for 3 with three RBI and two runs scored. Taryn Goodman was also 2 for 3 in the win.
But the story was Fowler-Cornfeld, who yielded just two walks over her five innings while striking out four.
"It was exciting," Herman said. "She pitched very well, she hit her spots. We've been asking for more consistency from her and today we got it."
The second game was more of the same as Williams scored four runs in the bottom of the first to take a 4-0 lead. Lye led off with a walk and after a lineout, scored on a double by Katie Powers. With two outs, Caitlyn Cain singled and Morgan Simpson followed with a three-run homer to left.
Lye hit a lead-off home run in the second, Libby Copeland-Halperin added a two-run shot in the fourth and Lye capped her day with a two-run shot in the fifth. Lye finished 3 for 4 with three RBI, a walk, two home runs and a triple in the game.
Powers finished 2 for 3 with two RBI and a double, Copeland-Halperin was 3 for 4 with two RBI and her home run, and Simpson was 2 for 3 with three RBI and a home run.
