Kosgey leads Ephs to Little Three title

The Williams men’s cross country team captured their 20th
consecutive Little Three title by beating Amherst and Wesleyan at
Long Lane Farm in Middletown, Connecticut. The Ephs scored 24
points to Amherst’s 33. Sophomore Edgar Kosgey topped the
field with a superb time of 25:56 on the challenging 8K course.
The Little Three meet is a favorite of many runners on the team
for its long-standing tradition of competitiveness and team
camaraderie. This year was no exception, as a solid Amherst squad
looked to end two decades of Ephs’ dominance over the Little
Three. The Williams harriers had no intention of surrendering the
streak, however, and before the race each athlete focused intensely
on the task ahead.
In unseasonably warm weather the Ephs ran a moderate warm-up and
headed to the starting line for the race, which began promptly at
1:15 pm. The three teams bounded off the line and began the first
circuit around the upper field, with the lead runners completing
the first mile in 5 minutes 10 seconds. Corey Watts ’10 and
Kosgey led the race into the first lower woods and fields loop.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Ephs settled into groups of three or
four with their teammates.
The Ephs stepped lightly up the steep 20-meter hill into the
second upper fields loop so as not to enter oxygen debt halfway
into the race. At the three-mile mark, captain Corey Levin
’08 led the field with Kosgey and an Amherst runner. Watts,
Brendan Christian ’09, captain Grant Burgess ’08, and
Morgan Seybert ’08 also established themselves at the head of
the race.
Four miles into the contest, Kosgey found himself alone in first
place with a comfortable 20-meter margin. By now many of the Ephs
ran alone as well, fighting through the discomfort of the hard
effort.
Finally the runners charged up the final steep grade to the
homestretch, where several Ephs flew past Amherst and Wesleyan
runners to the finish line. Behind Kosgey, Levin secured third
place in 26:10, Watts was fifth in 26:24, Burgess was seventh in
26:32, and Christian was fifth in 26:34. Connor Kamm ’10 and
Seybert completed the Ephs’ top seven in tenth and eleventh
place, respectively.
“The quality of the Williams pack running gave us the edge
today,” captain Jared Oubre ’08 said after the
race.
“The last time we lost Little 3, the first-years and
sophomores weren’t even born,” Jim Clayton ’08
pointed out.
Coach Pete Farwell was also exuberant after the race. He noted
that despite the Ephs’ long tradition of Little 3 victories,
the meet continues to be exciting and spirited. “At this meet
we cheer for the last runner just as much as for the
first.”
Next weekend Williams returns to its home course at Mt. Greylock
High School for the NESCAC championships.
