Ephs Second at Plansky Invitational

The Williams men’s cross country team finished second
behind MIT at the Plansky Invitational at Mount Greylock High
School today. Led by a first place finish from sophomore Edgar
Kosgey, who finished the 6K course in 19 minutes 10 seconds, the
Ephs scored 41 points to MIT’s 34.
It was a chilly but sunny afternoon at the Eph’s home
course, just a few miles south of campus on Cold Spring Road. Since
this is the team’s final invitational meet before
championship season begins next weekend, assistant coach Mitchell
Baker ’04 advised the harriers to race conservatively.
“Let’s run the first 2K at tempo pace and then race the
last 4K,” Baker told the runners in a pre-race meeting.
Despite this somewhat cautious strategy, the Ephs placed their
scoring five in the top 15 and put 11 racers in the top 25.
The starting gun fired at 1:04 pm, a few minutes behind schedule,
and the Williams runners settled into the middle of the pack
according to plan. After coming around the first baseball loop,
about 5 minutes into the race, Kosgey, Brendan Christian ’09,
and Morgan Seybert ’08 led the Ephs behind a couple of MIT
runners. By the 1.5 mile mark on the straightaway by the grass
track, Christian had a solid third place standing, with Kosgey and
Morgan on his heels. Tri-captains Corey Levin ’08 and Grant
Burgess ’08, Mack Chaffee ’09, Corey Watts ’10,
Jeff Stenzel ’10, and Sam Jackson ’10 made up the
Ephs’ chase pack.
After the second baseball field loop, at about two miles into the
race, Christian had moved into first place. Meanwhile, Burgess and
Jim Clayton ’08 had made significant advances to join the top
runners. About 800 meters later, Kosgey joined Brendan and the two
Ephs led the race stride for stride. Seybert was about ten meters
back, followed by Levin and a slew of purple and white jerseys.
The Ephs charged up the final long hill in the woods by the
Sweetwood nursing home, and at the top Kosgey found himself in
second place. Seybert was fourth and Christian dropped to sixth.
Relaxing somewhat in the slipstream behind the race leader from
MIT, Kosgey regrouped for the final 400 meters around the grass
track. With long fluid strides, he passed his MIT opponent and
sprinted to the finish to win with a comfortable margin. Seybert
battled valiantly with a Tufts runner on the finishing stretch to
capture seventh place in 19:22. Christian finished in eighth in
19:27, and Levin was tenth in 19:32. Connor Kamm ’10 and
Watts dueled with an MIT runner down the finishing stretch, but
only Kamm was victorious to secure fifteenth place and the last
cherished Plansky Invitational t-shirt. Sam Jackson ’10 was
18th to complete the Ephs’ top seven runners.
“I felt easy. Today was easy,” Kosgey mused after the
race. Originally from Kenya, Kosgey has developed keen race
instincts this season to match his impressive physical talents.
Seybert also had a breakout race, coming back from a slightly
discouraging finish last weekend at Franklin Park.
Next Saturday Williams travels to Wesleyan for the Little Three
Championships, one of the most highly anticipated meets of the
season. Since 1970 Williams has won the traditional Little Three
rivalry with Amherst and Wesleyan 35 of 37 years.
