BOSTON, Mass--Only a handful of Ephs competed at the New England Indoor Track & Field Championships at Boston University on Saturday. Those who did race, however, offered spectacular performances, with several athletes earning NCAA provisional qualifiers. The Boston University track held true to form as an extremely fast track. But credit the Williams athletes whose great performances are attributable primarily to relentless training, dedication, and self-control, as well as tactically smart and gutsy race performances.
Connor Kamm '10 was a very standout runner in high school, running a 4:21 1600m at altitude. Until this season, however, he had not yet raced with the strength and consistency that he did in high school. After coming back from a difficult set of injuries his junior year and having a very strong senior cross-country season, Kamm displayed his natural talent and work ethic on the track once again this year. His 4:16 at BU several weeks prior was a lifetime PR. His 8:32 at the Division III Championships last week was a very solid race. But his 4:11 mile at BU on Saturday was perhaps the best track race of his life. In running 4:11.56, Kamm not only ran a lifetime PR, he also earned a very high NCAA provisional mark and just missed an NCAA automatic qualifier.
Edgar Kosgey '10 also had a very strong cross-country season, culminating in a 3rd place finish at the NCAA Championships in Indiana. Despite several good outings on the track earlier this season, he had yet to earn an NCAA provisional mark, until Saturday. Kosgey dominated the field in the 5K and ran 14:40.76, the best time by an Eph in several seasons. His seven second margin of victory against a talented field was very impressive. Anthony Raduazo '12 was also in that race. Raduazo just missed a PR, running 14:58 and finishing 10th.
Tomas Kearney '12 fresh off an almost impossible string of 6
consecutive PR's in the triple jump, was not as strong at BU on
Saturday. While still impressive in and of itself, Kearney's best
effort of 13.87m in the triple jump at BU was well short of his
newly acquired PR. Richard Fusco '12 bounced back from a tough 600m
at the Division III Championships to run the 500m in 1:04.95.
Finally, the Ephs displayed an improved 4x800m team on Saturday as
Alex Rich '13, Tommy Gaidus '13, Peter Young '13 and Daniel Franck
'11 combined to run 7:54, definitely their best mark of the season.
Stay tuned as championship season continues with the ECAC Championships next Saturday followed by Nationals the week after.
