Boston, MA-- Macklin Chaffee sure is finding his stride. A week after winning two individual events, Chaffee won the 1000m final at Division I All-New Englands...and set a school record. Chaffee, a senior, ran 2:26.82, beating alum Michael Davitian's '07 mark by less than .1 seconds. Once again, however, Chaffee was also a part of a magnificent team effort. Brendan Christian '09, Deividas "Lithium" Seferis '09, Andy Morgosh '12, and Viktor Nagy '12 all set personal best times at Boston University on either Friday or Saturday.

Division I All-New Englands is a great opportunity for athletes to post a season best for two reasons: the competition is top class and the track, Boston University's, is very fast. An example of the competition: Michael Rutt of Connecticut ran the 1st lap of his 800 in high-51 before finishing in 1:48.18. For other athletes, Division I's is a tune-up for bigger races even later in the season, especially Nationals. Such was the case for Chaffee, as well as 400 meter runners Seferis, Nagy, Taylor "Fitz" Fitzgerald '11, and Alex Hoerman '09.

I talked to "Lithium" before his race and his goal was simple, break 22.00 seconds. And break it he would, flying to a 21.91 sec finsihing time in the 200m preliminaries before finishing 3rd in the finals with another fast time of 22.05, scoring 6 points for the team. Viktor Nagy also had an interesting story to tell, and almost had a school record in the 500. Nagy ran 1:04.81 in the finals of the 500m, good for 6th place and three points, and thought he had the school record. "I was told that the school record was 1:04.9, so when I saw my time, I thought I had the school record," recalled Nagy. "However, I later found out that I just missed it by less than one tenth of a second." Still, Nagy is quite a promising freshman, and with solid training the indoor 500 record should be his in a matter of time. Without the focus transitioning to the 4 x 400, however, and outdoor season fast approaching, the record will have to wait until next year.

The other noteworthy performance came courtesy of senior Brendan Christian. Fresh off a victory in the 5000 last week at the Divsion III Championships, Christian was hoping to set a big PR in the 5000 at BU. With lofty goals for the outdoor season, Christian hoped that he could lower his 5000 personal best so that a mid 30-minute 10K would seem more achievable. Despite losing the lead pack midway through the race, Christian hung tough. Taking advantage of his superior aerobic base, Christian moved up throughout the second half of the race, moving all the way from 9th to 3rd. His time of 14:49 is a fifteen second PR.

Please stay tuned as we follow the Ephs at ECAC's and Nationals in the coming weeks.
