Men's Outdoor Track & Field Season Outlook

Deividas Seferis '09
Fletcher Brooks' Williams men's track & field team will be
looking to extend two impressive conference and regional streaks
and make a national impact this spring.
The Ephmen return four All-Americans from last outdoor season to
anchor the team in its regional and national competitions in senior
tri-captain Macklin Chaffee and three-fourths of the 2008 4x400
relay team – senior tri-captains Deividas Seferis and Alex
Hoerman and sophomore Taylor Fitzgerald.
Chaffee snagged a school record in route to runner-up honors in the
2008 NCAA 1500-meter run.
First year Viktor Nagy who competed at the NCAA Indoor
Championships looks to be the leading candidate to fill the fourth
spot on the 4x400 relay.
After a successful indoor season that saw the Ephs put together a
solid team effort up and down the lineup to upset favored MIT for
the New England Division III title, goals are high for this spring
as the team looks to defend NESCAC and New England Division III
championships.
In addition to this indoor season's national meet qualifiers
(Chaffee, Fitzgerald, Hoerman, Seferis, and Nagy), other standout
performers from the winter season include cross country
All-American Jeff Perlis, a junior, and senior Brendan Christian in
the long distance events, as well as sophomores Geoff Rodriguez,
Brian Cole and junior Edgar Kosgey in the middle
distances.
In the jumps, sophomore Steve Rubin, senior Eric Jonash, and first
year Tomas Kearney will look to build off their successful indoor
seasons and score valuable points for the Ephs, while sophomore
Matt Farley hopes to improve upon his third place finish in last
year’s NESCAC hammer throw.
Senior Stew Buck who finished second in New England last year in
the 400-meter hurdles will also be counted on for valuable
points.
While talented up front, the Ephs will need inspired performances
from throughout the roster to win NESCAC and New England
titles. The Ephs have been NESCAC champions 16 out of the
last 17 years, including the last 8 consecutive years. In addition,
the Ephs will be gunning for their sixth straight New England
Division III title.
In Chaffee’s words, “With All-American seniors and
incredible underclassman potential, we could make this season
something special.”
