Men's Track Heads East for ECACs

Williams Track and Field traveled across the state today to compete at the ECAC Championships at Harvard University. The Ephs, fielding a small men’s squad of only three individuals – all seniors – and a relay team, still managed a twelfth-place finish against Division III competition in the final race of the season before the NCAA championships next weekend.
The competitors at the meet were an evenly split cross section of the team – a sprinter, a distance runner, a field event-er, and a relay squad. Multiply each of these types of athletes and you’ve got an entire team.
Senior Andrew Arons competed in the 55 meter dash and the 400 meter dash. In the 55, he failed to qualify for the finals, placing ninth in the preliminaries with a time of 6.58 seconds. He fared much better in the 400 as he took second place in 49.44 seconds, scoring almost half of Williams’ team points with his finish.
On the other end of the running spectrum, senior Morgan Seybert took sixth place in the 3000 meter run. Seybert maintained his 3k consistency, running 8:46.29, and adding three more points to Williams’ score.
In the shot put, Andrew DeSalvo ’08 threw 14.78 meters to place fifth. His throw was short of his season-best 15.41 meters, which he tossed at the Division III New England Championships, nonetheless a solid performance out of the senior thrower.
In the 1600 meter relay, Williams’ squad completed the eight-lap combo in 3:23.25 seconds. The time was good enough to earn fourth place in the competition, and earn the final five points of Williams’ score.
Following this event, Williams came out with twenty points and a twelfth place finish. The overall winner of the race was St. Lawrence, who beat out second place by 10 points with their score of 69.
Next week is the NCAA Championships at Ohio Northern University. As the Ephs head west to Ohio they should be tapered and ready – and not too worn out from midterms – as they go on to face the best Division III competition in the country.
